This introductory class explores the actor’s process from script analysis to role creation—using imagination to illuminate words written by someone else, which I believe is at the heart of what we do as actors.
I believe deeply in both technique and instinct, in rigorous training as well as creativity and play. My goal is to help each student discover and strengthen their own unique responsiveness as an artist, developing a deeper awareness of what they personally need to meet a challenge and do their best work.
Acting begins with imagination, connection, and presence—especially in relationship to your scene partner(s). Every actor works differently: one student may connect most strongly through visual imagery, while another may unlock a scene through breathwork, movement, or a kinesthetic approach. Part of the work is building a rich toolbox of techniques and learning when and how to use them.
I primarily work with scenes from plays because they offer actors a strong sense of narrative arc and are written specifically to serve the actor’s craft. This foundation also prepares students for the continuity and storytelling demands of filmed and edited work.
